How to learn to drive in the UK
Follow these six steps to go from complete beginner to full licence holder.
Get your provisional licence
Apply for a provisional driving licence from the DVLA at gov.uk. You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to apply, and 17 to drive on public roads.
Find a DVSA-approved instructor
Search by your postcode on Reliant to find a DVSA-approved instructor near you. Choose male or female, manual or automatic. Pay a one-off £19.95 introduction fee when matched.
Pass your theory test
You must pass the DVSA theory test before booking your practical test. It has two parts: multiple-choice (50 questions, pass mark 43) and hazard perception. Book at gov.uk.
Build your driving skills
Your instructor will guide you through all the skills you need — manoeuvres, junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, and independent driving. The DVSA average is around 45 hours of professional tuition.
Book and pass your practical test
When your instructor says you are ready, book your practical driving test at a local test centre. The test lasts around 40 minutes and includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, and a driving assessment.
Get your full licence
