What happens on your first driving lesson?
Your first lesson typically starts with your instructor explaining the controls of the car. You'll then practise moving off and stopping in a quiet area. Don't expect to be on busy roads — your instructor will build up gradually.
What do I need to bring to my first driving lesson?
You must bring your provisional driving licence (the photocard). Without it, your instructor cannot legally teach you. You don't need to bring anything else, but wear comfortable shoes with a firm sole.
Do I need a provisional licence before my first lesson?
Yes. You must have a valid provisional driving licence before you can take driving lessons. Apply at gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence. It typically takes 1–3 weeks to arrive.
How long is a first driving lesson?
Most first lessons are 1–2 hours. Some instructors offer a longer introductory lesson. Discuss with your instructor what works best for you — shorter lessons can be better for beginners as concentration fades.
Will I drive on the road on my first lesson?
Usually yes, but in a quiet area. Your instructor will choose a safe, low-traffic location for your first lesson. You won't be taken onto busy roads until you're ready.

Lesson rates are set by each individual instructor. Many instructors offer a discounted introductory lesson. You pay a one-off £19.95 introduction fee to Reliant when matched, then agree lesson rates directly with your instructor.
What should I wear for my first driving lesson?
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes with a firm, flat sole. Avoid flip-flops, high heels, or very thick-soled shoes — you need to feel the pedals clearly.
