Theory Test — What to Expect
The theory test has two parts, both taken on the same day at a DVSA test centre.
Multiple Choice
- 50 questions from the DVSA question bank
- 57 minutes to complete
- Pass mark: 43 out of 50
- Questions cover Highway Code, road signs, safety
Hazard Perception
- 14 video clips of real driving situations
- Click when you spot a developing hazard
- Pass mark: 44 out of 75
- One clip has two scoreable hazards
What to Bring
- Your UK driving licence (photocard)
- Your theory test booking confirmation
- Arrive 15 minutes early
- No phones or smart watches in the test room
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them
- Your National Insurance number (if no photocard)
Practical Driving Test — What to Expect
The practical test lasts around 40 minutes and is conducted by a DVSA examiner.
Eyesight check
Read a number plate from 20 metres. Fail this and the test ends immediately.
Vehicle safety questions
"Show me / tell me" questions about your car — 1 question each.
General driving
Around 40 minutes of independent driving on various road types.
Independent driving
20 minutes following a sat-nav or road signs without instruction.
Manoeuvres
One of: parallel park, bay park (forward or reverse), or pull up on the right.
Pass mark
No more than 15 minor faults. Zero serious or dangerous faults.
What to Bring
- Your UK photocard driving licence
- Your theory test pass certificate (if issued before 2012)
- Your instructor will usually bring the car
- Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment
- Glasses or contact lenses if required
- Your booking confirmation email
