Smart motorways — do you know the rules?
Over 400 miles of UK motorway now operate as smart motorways. Many drivers — including experienced ones — are unsure how to respond to variable speed limits, red X signals and emergency refuge areas. Our instructors will make sure you're fully prepared.

Motorway lesson questions answered
- Can learner drivers go on the motorway?
- Yes — since June 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales can drive on motorways, but only when accompanied by an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a car with dual controls. You cannot take a learner on the motorway in a private car.
- Do I need motorway lessons before my test?
- Motorway driving is not part of the standard practical driving test. However, your examiner may ask you to drive on a dual carriageway, which shares many characteristics. Post-test motorway lessons are strongly recommended before you drive on the motorway alone.
- What is a smart motorway and why does it matter?
- Smart motorways use technology to manage traffic flow — variable speed limits, overhead gantry signs and, on all-lane running motorways, the hard shoulder is used as a live lane. Understanding how to respond to these systems is essential for safe motorway driving.
- How many motorway lessons will I need?
- Most drivers feel significantly more confident after 2–4 motorway lessons. Your instructor will assess your progress and recommend the right number for you.
- Is motorway driving included in Pass Plus?
- Yes — motorway driving is one of the six modules in the Pass Plus scheme. If you're considering Pass Plus, it's an efficient way to cover motorway training alongside other post-test skills.
- Can I do motorway lessons in an automatic car?
- Yes. Motorway lessons are available in both manual and automatic vehicles. If you passed in an automatic, your motorway lessons will be in an automatic car.
